Trip des Schoune: spiced, original-tasting beer (in a good way)
MB Schounes, QC, Canada
A murky, spicy, witch's brew of a beer. A monstrous 8% ABV when bottled, after a year in my cellar I estimate it at nearer 9% ABV -- it's had plenty of time to ferment further in the bottle, as it's on lees (live yeast).
Orange-gold-amber in colour, it starts strong and bitter, swirls sweetly around in your mouth and then returns with a bitter tang after the swallow. Look past the yeast floating around in the beer, it won't affect the performance!
The spices are subtle, pepper and coriander, not clove and allspice like many winter brews. Underneath it all is the warming presence of the alcohol, not at all as forward as equivalent Unibroue beers tend to be.
Above all, try this beer. It won't be for everybody, but in a market that is served by plenty of copycat beers, Trip des Schoune is noteworthy and original.
