On the Two Brothers Artisan label for
2007. one is Victor’s
Memoriale Altbier. It's 7.8% abv. Memoriale has a
very subtle aroma, ample in body and deep color.
This beer is a fine tribute to the grandfather of the Two Brothers Ebel.
The flavor is intense, with a strong hop presence going down where it dissipates nicely.
In short I would say it has roasted malt flavor with a hoppy overbite, nice finish and not gassy. It actually went down like a younger batch of Two Brothers Bare Tree.
I
would love to down ice cold glasses of this while barbequing
ribs.
I like it. It's bold and crisp, but not as clingy in aftertaste as some reds can be cloying... ahem... Killians, for example!
I honestly think Red Ales don't get the respect
they
deserve. Like a middle child they act out with their unabashed colors
and
alcohol content.
Yet this Two Brothers Artisan beer has the stoic character of a casual business lunch or work party (depending on where you work). Never the perfect pick for any occasion, but the flavor complexity connotes a level of sophistication.
I personally enjoy the surprise (like a box of Cracker Jacks) from different brewer's interpretations of them. If brewers were baseball pitchers, Red Ale would be the knuckle ball of their pitching arsenal; you never know what it's going to do.
