Another Brick Brewing beer, Waterloo Dark for some reason has a wild boar's head on the label, though I drank it on draught.
For a moment, when it arrived I thought the server had mistaken my British accent (it was bloody loud in there) and brought me a Coke. It looked just like it, pitch black and slightly fizzy, with a mild brown bubble scum on the top.
And when I smelled the beer, although I knew what it was, there was more than a hint of cola about it. Cola is, of course, a bloody weird drink, when you stop to think about it, so that's not altoghter surprising.
I began to think that the entire city of Toronto was loaded with gas that evening, as once again, I sipped the Waterloo Dark and got a mouthful of bubbles. It's like a brewer decided to get as close to Coke as possible without breaking any copyright rules. But the comparison ends there, as it doesn't TASTE anything like cola!
It's a very bitter, thin, licorice-sweet beer. Smelling it again seals the deal, as there's a full aniseed nose there when you look for it.
I'd say it's the perfect winter's brew, something to warm you up and layer some meat on your ribs on a cold December day. But it's really a bit too fizzy to drink a lot of. Fans of porters might find it reminds them of a smoke-free porter, with a medium, burnt caramel aftertaste.
I'd call Waterloo Dark is fairly average, but certainly an interesting beer to try at least once in your life. Napoleon wouldn't surrender if he had been forced to face this Waterloo though.
