Wernesgruener Pils Legende: sharp pils

Wernesgruener Pils Legende (4.9% ABV)
Wernesgruener Brewery, Wernesgrun, Germany

Sharp, clear, straw-coloured beer with little head and lots of carbonation. Thin, fizzy mouthfeel and nicely balanced, with a soft, sweetish bite followed quickly by extreme bitter, yet wheaty hop taste.

Lingering milder bitterness eventually pales to a final ghost of sweetness a minute or so later. A fine summer thirst-quencher.

Imagine my surprise

I was first introduced to Wernesgruener beer in Berlin, Germany in 2000, upon visiting friends of our foreign exchange student. I enjoyed it so much, I saved and display the bottle, thinking never again would I have the pleasure of one of the world's finest beers.

Imagine my surprise and delight to find this beer from eastern Germany in our local Aldi's grocery store in Iowa City, Iowa, for a price lower than that demanded by inferior brands. Poured slowly down the side of the glass, splashed onto the bottom of the glass for greater head, or straight from the bottle, this beer's flavor and drinkability will delight you.

Brewed since 1436 under Germany's strict purity laws, this wonderfully tasteful beer is very refreshing and satisfying, my favorite. My brother enjoyed Germany's beers while visiting us in Germany; I'm so glad I can soon surprise him with Wernesgruener beer.

I am reminded of my German language professors both in America and in Germany who urged me to avoid unhealthy, sugary American soft drinks and urged good quality German beer for its health benefits, a couple per week. With pleasure.

This is my first taste of the house's Pils Legende, and it's terrific. Being of German descent, naturally of course, my heart goes to German beers. And Wernesgrüner Pils Legende has taken over my beery affections. A super beer. A super "blonde," as we say in Québec.
