White beer
review: Battle of the White Biers (with an "i"), Hoegaarden vs. Blue
Moon
Submitted by James Collins
In
a time where dark lagers and black and tan beer reigns supreme, it is
important to know which of the polar opposite cousins,
the "whites", are most delicious, in case there is someone at the
gathering who doesn't like Guinness.
Today I submit a comparison of my top two white biers, (yes, with an "i"), Hoegaarden and Blue Moon.
Both are imports. The difference is, Hoegaarden, which should be obvious by its strangely delicious name, is pure Belgian, while Blue Moon is actually brewed by our brothers to the North, Molson Canada.

I was able to tell without reading the labels that only Hoegaarden was the true Belgian anyway, as per ingredients.
Putting the two together, Hoegaarden resembles a puffy cloud with the sun poking out behind it, if that can even be captured in a glass.
Blue Moon, because it is mixed with wheat, gives off a brownish hue, not actually a white glow.
How do they rank taste-wise?
Blue Moon is good. The fine wheat aftertaste leaves a nice feeling on the tongue. However, Hoegaarden, with its froth and purity, is the winner hands-down in my honest opinion.
Be sure to try either with an orange wedge, as is white bier (with an "i") custom.
On one final note for this white beer review. Let's take a look at price. Everywhere I've been that has carried both, Blue Moon is cheaper.
However, a lot of places I go to fail to
carry both, which is where Blue Moon wins again, as I find it in 60 per
cent more places than the rare Hoegaarden.

So,
to summarise, if it was a good Christmas that translated into extra
loot in the bank account and driving to a few stores is an
option, by all means, have a Hoegaarden.
If walking is the only option because gas is unaffordable to drive to a liquor store, Blue Moon is the way to go.
